Flashcards: The Best Invention Since Sliced Bread.

Objectively speaking, of course. They absolutely saved me in college and will always have a special place in my heart.

Flashcards do more than review—they teach students how to study. During partner activities, students quiz one another on previously taught morphemes, reinforcing content while developing a valuable and transferable study habit.

Let’s not forget the golden rule of mastery: repetition, repetition, REPETITION. The repetitive nature of flashcard practice helps move information from short-term memory into long-term understanding, especially when students say the morpheme, definition, and example out loud.

This activity also promotes collaboration, accountability, and confidence. Whether they're correcting each other’s mistakes or cheering each other on, students are actively engaging with the material—which is far more effective than passive review. Plus, since we’ve created the flashcards together, students feel ownership over the content.

So yes, sliced bread is great. But flashcards? Legendary.

🖍 How the Routine Works

I include explicit directions on the Flash Card Review capture sheet, which I'll let you check out below. My-coteacher and I circulate while students support each other.

The record boxes continue on the back for several rounds.
